SF: Palace of Fine Arts Theater

Arts, Thing To See |

San Francisco - Aesthetically this place is insane!!  It’s like a small piece of ancient Rome was transplanted and dropped in the middle of San Francisco.  Makes you question whether you’re really in SF.  We stumbled on it while we were making our way to the Golden gate bridge.  We never got a chance to go inside because it was closed for renovations.  But it was nice just chill outside and take in the scenery.

While working our way around the grounds of the Palace we bumped into this dude from Rome (we shit you not), who created his own depiction of the building.  Him being there at that exact moment added a nice touch to the overall experience.  So we snapped a couple pictures of him in action.

The atmosphere is unreal and it’s perfect for a walk, picnic, or to just relax and veg for a bit.  And if you find yourself in San Francisco, then this is one place that you should definitely check out. 3301 Lyon Street (at Bay St), 415.563.6504

SF: 111 at 111 Minna Gallery

Arts, Nightlife |

San Francisco – The art scene in San Francisco is pretty huge, and a lot of the nightlife activities are powered by it. If you’re wondering where people in San Francisco go to socialize and drink.  It’s to places like 111 Minna, a lounge that’s half bar, half gallery.

We went for the 111 at 111 event that’s been running since Dec 2nd and ends on Jan 30.   The concept behind the event is pretty simple, it showcases the works of 111 local artists at a venue named 111 Minna.

From the minute we arrived, it was pretty clear that this is where the people who can coordinate an outfit hang out. We were impressed with the venue’s décor and just the overall vibe of the place.  Not to mention the artwork, which was on point, the music (hip hop), and the stealthily strong drinks that were served up at the bar.

Nightlife wise, this was our favorite spot.   So when in you’re in SF be sure to check this spot out. 111 Minna Gallery, 111 Minna, 415.974.1719; www.111minnagallery.com

TIP Wednesday’s are apparently the best nights.

SF: Creative Expression In The Mission

Arts |

Mission District Murals – San Francisco is one of those cities that has a deep-seated itch for creative expression.  For instance, the city has alleyways that are entirely devoted to street art. Yeah, Street art is pretty ubiquitous nowadays, but it’s still interesting to check out.  This is where we queue in the Mission District and it’s urine infested alleyways (Clarion & Balmy Alley) and walls that are beautified with vibrant murals.

You might drive yourself crazy trying to find these streets.  We most definitely did, we had to ask around a few times for directions, but after some aimless wandering we eventually found them.  Well, we found our way to Clarion alley, but we never did make our way to Balmy alley. The murals are good and depending on your taste worth checking out.  But it’s not the best we’ve seen.  With that said, we still advise you to go and judge for yourself.

TIPS!

Clarion Alley is close to 16th St Bart.  Go to 17th St, then turn Left on Clarion Alley. Also, walk along 24th from Mission to Balmy Street to see more murals.

T.O.: Tim Burton Exhibit

Arts, Thing To See |

Toronto – If you’re a fan of the creative genius of Tim Burton and you happen to find yourself in Toronto anytime between the 26 of Nov, 2010 to the 17 of April, 2011, then we strongly suggest that you check out the Tim Burton exhibit.  The exhibit, which was originally held in NY’s MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) was transported to Toronto’s brand spanking new Tiff Bell Lightbox.

The exhibit  explores Tim’s early work from his teenage years up until his most treasured recent films.  The exhibit received rave reviews in NY and promises to do the same in Toronto, so if you missed it the first time around here’s your chance. 330 King St W, Toronto, 416.599.8433; www.tiff.net.

LDN: Tate Modern

Arts, Thing To See, Things to Do |

London – The Tate Modern is just downright cool and deserves a walk through. The former Bankside Power Station turned contemporary art house, displays everything from Picasso to Warhol, and they’re infamous for their groundbreaking exhibitions.   But the best part of it all is that entry is FREE (except for special exhibitons).  You can’t lose when something is free, right?

If you go, try and take yourself there on a Friday or Saturday when the  doors don’t close til 10pm. That way you won’t find yourself rushed.  Bankside, London SE1,020. 7887.8752; www.tate.org.uk

LDN: Gallery Hunting

Arts, Things to Do |

London - The art scene in London is huge. If you’re the artsy type, then gallery hunting is a must.  It won’t be to hard to find them, during our stay in London we stumbled on 4 of them.  We were only able to snap pics in 2 of the galleries but here’s a quick sample of what we saw.
